Current Experience

Susan qualified as an Occupational Therapist from the Liverpool College of Occupational Therapists in 1985

Susan has been working as a consultant preparing reports under the Care Expert remit for N-Able Services since 2006.

Susan has prepared expert reports on claimants with a wide range of injuries and medical conditions including Mesothelioma, neurological and orthopaedic injuries and pain syndromes.

Susan has experience of compiling Care Needs Assessments and Immediate Needs Assessments which have involved writing detailed and evidence based reports.

In her current role of Team Manager of the Occupational Therapy Team, Independent Living Centre and Initial Referral Team of Walsall Council Susan is responsible for the management and development of these three services which includes initial point of contact for Adult Social Care, equipment and adaptation provision, re-ablement, manual handling, telecare, Blue Badge mobility assessments, short term wheelchair loans and Shopmobility. All teams fall within the initial intake service promoting the prevention agenda by seeking to provide alternatives to long term packages of care.

The Independent Living Centre is a show case for new pieces of assistive technology as a result knowledge of new developments is key.

The need for extensive experience of assessing functional needs and making a range of recommendations to address them is a vital part of this role. The service user group is broad including both adults and children with physical disabilities, mental health problems, learning disabilities or sensory impairments.

More recently Susan’s role has included the preparation of independent management reviews for the local Adult Safeguarding Board.

The skills that Susan has developed in her role as an Occupational Therapist and Independent Living Centre Manager have been invaluable in ensuring she delivers a high standard of Care Expert and Immediate Needs assessment reports.


Previous Experience

Prior to her current role Susan worked as a Senior Practitioner and Occupational Therapist for Walsall Council gaining extensive experience in assessing the functional needs of both adults and children with disabilities and recommending the provision of equipment and/or adaptations to meet these needs.

Susan has also worked for Aylesbury Vale Health Authority as an Occupational Therapist at the National Spinal Injuries Centre. This role involved the rehabilitation of paraplegic and tetraplegic patients and preparing them for discharge with close liaison with local authority based equipment and adaptation services.

Prior to working in Aylesbury Susan was employed by North Staffordshire Health Authority as an Occupational Therapist. Here she gained experience in stroke rehabilitation where her main duties were to develop and implement individual rehabilitation programmes and facilitate safe discharge from hospital through the provision of equipment and adaptations. She also gained experience working with adults with moderate to severe learning disabilities engaging them in meaningful activity and promoting independence in daily living skills
